PrEP and PEP Services

What Is PrEP?
Pre-exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) is a medication taken by people who do not have HIV to prevent HIV transmission. When taken properly, PrEP is highly effective for preventing HIV transmission. PrEP is available for all individuals regardless of gender or sexual preference and is highly effective when taken as prescribed.
Consider Taking PrEP If…
  • Your sex partner has HIV
  • You don’t always use condoms
  • You have multiple sexual partners
  • You’ve been diagnosed with an STI in the last six months
  • You’re HIV-negative and share needles or other drug injection equipment
  • You have a drug-injecting partner with HIV
  • What Is PEP?
Post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) is taken after being potentially exposed to HIV to prevent becoming infected and must be started within 72 hours after a possible exposure to HIV.
    Consider Taking PEP If…
  • You had unprotected sex, or the condom broke during sex
  • You shared needles or syringes
  • A recent sexual partner has notified you that they have HIV
  • What Is PrEP?

HIV stands for human immunodeficiency virus. It weakens a person’s immune system by destroying important cells that fight disease and infection.

    PEP

PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) are antiretroviral medicines (ART) taken after being potentially exposed to HIV to prevent becoming infected and must be started within 72 hours after a recent possible exposure to HIV.

    STI Testing and Treatment

Sexually transmitted infections (STIs), also referred to as sexually transmitted diseases (STDs), are infections that are commonly spread by sexual activity.

    How effective is PrEP?
According to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), taking PrEP as directed reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by more than 99 percent. For people who inject drugs, PrEP also reduces the risk of getting HIV by 74 percent when taken consistently.
Does PrEP protect me from STIs?
While PrEP is highly effective at protecting you from HIV, it does not protect you from other sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It is still strongly recommended to wear condoms when having sex.
    How much does PrEP cost?
If you have private medical insurance, PrEP may be covered, including deductibles and copays. Talk with your insurance provider for details.
If you do not have private health insurance, we are happy to help you figure out the best way to get the medicine you need!
Keep in mind that at Harmony Healthcare, we offer services and treatment regardless of your insurance status or ability to pay. We believe that healthcare should be available and accessible to everyone.
    How effective is PEP?
If taken within 72 hours after possible exposure, PEP is highly effective in preventing HIV.
