PrEP Consultation vs. HIV Testing: What’s the Difference?
April 29, 2025Take charge of your health this National HIV Testing Day. Learn why HIV testing matters, what to expect, and how Harmony Healthcare makes it easy and stigma-free.
At Harmony Healthcare, we believe that caring for your health should never come with fear, shame, or barriers. National HIV Testing Day, observed every year on June 27, is an opportunity to recognize the power of knowledge and to encourage open conversations about testing, treatment, and prevention.
Whether HIV testing is already part of your routine or something you have been putting off, this day is a reminder: you deserve to know your status, and you deserve care.
Why National HIV Testing Day Matters
HIV is not a thing of the past — it continues to affect individuals and communities across the U.S. Over 1.2 million people are living with HIV today, and nearly 13% do not know it. That means too many people are living without access to the care, medication, and support they need.
Early testing changes everything. It opens the door to life-saving treatment for individuals whose tests are reactive. For those whose tests are non-reactive, it creates opportunities to explore powerful prevention tools, like PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis). This once-a-day medication reduces the risk of contracting HIV by up to 99%.
Testing is not just about results. It’s about your long-term health, peace of mind, and empowerment.
How We Make Testing Accessible
At Harmony Healthcare, we offer confidential, inclusive, and affirming HIV testing services at no cost to you. Whether you have insurance or not, you are welcome here.
Our clinics offer:
- Walk-in or scheduled no-cost HIV testing
- Quick results — often in 20 minutes or less
- Supportive staff trained in LGBTQ+ inclusive care
- Access to PrEP consultations, case management, and treatment services if needed
We also work to meet people where they are. In honor of National HIV Testing Day, our outreach team hosts community-based testing events in select areas every year to bring services directly into neighborhoods that need them most.
This year, our Orlando outreach team is partnering with Walgreens to offer no-cost HIV testing at:
4300 Curry Ford Rd, Orlando, FL 32806
June 26 and 27 from 3:00 PM – 6:00 PM
For details about this event and other outreach efforts, be sure to follow us on social media.
No one should have to jump through hoops to get tested or feel uncomfortable during the process. Our HIV medical care is rooted in dignity, safety, and compassion — always.
What to Expect During HIV Testing
If you’ve never been tested before, feeling nervous is normal. But the process is usually simple and fast:
- You will meet with a care provider or case manager to talk about your health history, ask questions, and decide which test is right for you.
- The test takes just a few minutes and may involve a finger prick or a cheek swab.
- You should receive your results the same day, often within 20 minutes.
- If your test is reactive, we will talk through the next steps and connect you to treatment right away.
- If you test non-reactive, we will explore whether a prevention option like PrEP is a good fit for your life.
PrEP Consultation vs. HIV Testing: What’s the Difference?
We offer both services, and they are deeply connected.
- HIV testing tells you your current HIV status.
- A PrEP consultation is for people who test negative and want to stay that way. You’ll talk with a provider about your lifestyle, health history, and whether PrEP is right for you.
Together, these tools give you control over your health. If you are unsure where to begin, we can help you decide.
Ending the Stigma Starts with Showing Up
HIV-related stigma continues to prevent people from getting tested, seeking care, or even talking about their experiences. It disproportionately affects LGBTQ+ individuals, communities of color, and people with limited access to healthcare.
But getting tested is not a sign of risk — it is a sign of responsibility. When we treat HIV testing as routine care (because it is), we normalize it for everyone. Talking openly about it helps others feel safe doing the same.
Every test is a step toward breaking the stigma and building a healthier, more compassionate future.
Frequently Asked Questions About HIV Testing
How often should I get tested for HIV?
If you are sexually active — especially with more than one partner, or without consistent barrier protection — we recommend getting tested every three months due to the window period. If you are on PrEP, you should also be tested every three months.
Does it hurt?
Testing is fast and generally painless. Most rapid tests use a finger prick or oral swab.
Will I be judged or outed?
No. All services at Harmony Healthcare are confidential and judgment-free. We do not share your information with anyone without your consent.
Can I bring a friend or partner with me?
Yes. You are welcome to bring someone along for support.
I am afraid of what the results might be. Should I still get tested?
Yes. Knowing your status allows you to take control of your health. If you test reactive, treatment can begin immediately, and people on treatment can live long, full lives. If you test non-reactive, we will help you stay that way.
