November 1, 2021In Orlando And Want To Start On PrEP? How PrEP Prevents HIV
December 15, 2021As LGBTQ+ healthcare providers, our team at Harmony Healthcare wants to wish you a very happy holiday season and share some ways you can care for yourself during this time.
The holidays can be a complicated time of year. For some, spending time with family creates memories. But for many others, they can be lonely and difficult. As LGBTQ+ healthcare providers, we know how important it is to take care of yourself both physically and emotionally, no matter what time of the year it is. Here we share some practical tips and resources that you can use to make sure that your holiday season is safe and comfortable.
Take Advantage of Community Services
The holidays can also be financially stressful – the COVID-19 pandemic has affected many households in Florida, and there are a record number of households facing food insecurity. Taking advantage of food assistance programs and free holiday meals can help alleviate the burden of purchasing food for yourself or your household.
If you do not have a place to go for a warm meal and company, there are many organizations in the community that plan events like this throughout the holiday season. The Case Management team at Harmony Healthcare works with our patients to connect them to local resources that meet their needs. Do not hesitate to reach out to us if you would like access to these programs.
Maintain Good Boundaries
Throughout the holiday season and beyond, you are allowed to care for yourself. Sometimes that means not attending certain events and creating new traditions instead or ending conversations that you’re not comfortable having. It’s helpful to internally define your boundaries ahead of time so that you feel more prepared for any situation where you may need to enforce them.
Remember Your Support System
If you’re going through a difficult time, it’s important to remember that you have people who care about you. Whether those people are in your family of origin or your chosen family, or even a friend who you can call or text, they want to be there for you and support you. If you are looking for additional support, there are resources available to you:
- The Trevor Project
- 24/7 access to a counselor
- Information and support for LGBTQ+ young people
- Trans Lifeline
- Peer support phone service
- Operated by trans people for trans or questioning peers
- National Suicide Prevention Lifeline
- 24/7 free and confidential support
- Distress, prevention, and crisis resources
Don’t Ignore Your Health
If the holidays are a busy time for you, it can be easy for your physical health to become an afterthought. This is why it’s so important to maintain the regular testing and treatment that you need. At Harmony Healthcare, our LGBTQ+ healthcare providers offer all-inclusive treatment and preventative care to members of the community, regardless of their insurance status or ability to pay.
If you have been overwhelmed by any aspect of this season, something as simple as eating a meal or moving your body can help clear your mind and boost your mood. Spending time outside, getting fresh air, and disconnecting are great ways to check in with yourself and see how you are feeling.
