Break The Stigma on National HIV Testing Day
June 10, 2025Does primary care do STI/STD testing? Learn how primary care clinics like ours make STI testing accessible, judgment-free, and part of your routine care.
Does Primary Care Do STI/STD Testing?
Yes — most primary care providers, including Harmony Healthcare, offer STI/STD testing as part of routine care. You don’t need to visit a specialty clinic or urgent care to get tested. Your primary care provider can often handle everything in one visit.
Here’s what you can expect:
- STI testing during routine checkups or wellness visits
- Confidential, judgment-free care
- Testing recommendations based on your health history or symptoms
- Access to treatment or prevention (like PrEP) if needed
Sexual health is a big part of your overall health. At Harmony Healthcare, we make it easy, safe, and stigma-free to get tested, no matter your background or insurance status.
Why STI Testing and Primary Care Go Hand in Hand
When people ask, “Does primary care do STI/STD testing?” they’re often unsure where to start. Primary care is the ideal place, especially if you’re building an ongoing relationship with a trusted provider.
Our providers are trained to:
- Have open, respectful conversations about your sexual health
- Offer screening for common STIs based on your lifestyle and risk factors
- Recommend the right test at the right time
- Support you with next steps, no matter the result
You shouldn’t have to visit multiple clinics to get the care you need. Harmony Healthcare offers STI testing and primary care services under one roof.
What’s Included in STI Testing?
STI testing can involve a combination of blood, urine, or swab tests. The exact tests will depend on what you’re being screened for and whether you’re showing any symptoms. Your provider may recommend testing for:
- Chlamydia and gonorrhea
- HIV
- Syphilis
- Hepatitis B and C
- Herpes
Many STIs don’t cause symptoms at first. That’s why routine STI/STD testing is an important part of preventive healthcare, especially if you’re sexually active, have new partners, or are on PrEP.
What to Expect During a Testing Visit
Never had STI testing before? No problem! Our team will walk you through it.
Here’s what a typical appointment looks like:
- A provider or case manager will ask about your health and any concerns
- You’ll get a simple test — usually a finger prick, urine sample, or oral swab.
- Results are often available the same day or within a few days.
- If your test is reactive, we’ll help you get treatment.
- If you test negative, we’ll discuss ways to stay protected (including PrEP).
Whether you’re experiencing symptoms or just being proactive, we’ll make sure you feel safe and supported.
When Should You Get STI/STD Testing?
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) provides testing recommendations based on your age, sexual activity, and risk level, and Harmony Healthcare aligns with these standards.
Here’s what’s recommended:
- Anyone ages 13–64 should be tested for HIV at least once. (Harmony Healthcare provides testing for adults 18 and up.)
- Sexually active women should have chlamydia and gonorrhea tests performed once a year.
- Pregnant women should be tested early in pregnancy for HIV, hepatitis B and C, and syphilis (typically by their OB/GYN).
- Sexually active men who have sex with men should be tested at least once a year for HIV, syphilis, chlamydia, and gonorrhea. If living with HIV, yearly hepatitis C testing is also recommended.
- Individuals who share injection drug equipment should get tested for HIV at least once a year.
Many STIs don’t cause symptoms, so it’s important to test regularly, not just when something feels off. You and your primary care provider can discuss what testing schedule is right for you.
