HIV And COVID-19: Frequently Asked Questions
Is COVID-19 More Serious For People With HIV?
We are still learning more about how COVID-19 affects people with HIV. Based on what we know at this time, people with HIV may be more likely to become seriously ill from COVID-19.
Some researchers have proposed that people with HIV who are not virally suppressed or on treatment may be at increased risk of contracting SARS-CoV-2, which is the virus that causes COVID-19. This is because of their compromised immune system. However, other researchers have not found a similar correlation.
Are COVID-19 Vaccinations Safe For People Who Have HIV?
The U.S. vaccine safety system makes sure that all vaccines are as safe as possible. Vaccines for COVID-19 have gone through the same safety tests, and have met the Food and Drug Administration’s rigorous scientific standards that are needed to support their authorization. People with HIV were also included in clinical trials for the COVID-19 vaccine.
Are People With HIV Protected From COVID-19 Once They Are Vaccinated?
The COVID-19 vaccine will provide protection from COVID-19, but people who have HIV or are taking medications that weaken their immune system may not be completely protected, even if they are fully vaccinated.
It is important to take all available precautions, including wearing a well-fitted mask and getting tested for COVID-19 until you are advised otherwise by a healthcare provider. To find vaccines near you, visit vaccines.gov.
Should I Get My COVID-19 Booster Shot?
If you have advanced or untreated HIV, you may benefit from a COVID-19 booster shot. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends that you get your additional dose at least 28 days after you have received your second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna vaccine.
At this time, the CDC does not recommend additional doses of the COVID-19 vaccine for people with HIV who are virally suppressed or who do not already have advanced HIV. It is always best to go to your healthcare provider for medical information and for answers to your questions.
Do COVID-19 Vaccines Interfere With HIV Medications?
There is no evidence at this time that the COVID-19 vaccine will interfere with the effectiveness of ART or PrEP.
