Pelvic Exam
A pelvic exam aims to check for internal lumps or pain. During the exam, you’ll feel pressure in the middle and on the sides of your abdomen. Be sure to speak up if you feel any discomfort or tenderness. Discomfort can indicate an issue that needs to be addressed.
Pap Smear/Cervical Exam
Every year, approximately 11,500 cases of cervical cancer are diagnosed, and about 4,000 people die from this type of cancer. With proper screening, these numbers can drop drastically.
This routine procedure can cause some anxiety, but we will do everything possible to keep you relaxed and answer your questions. During the exam, the physician will place a lubricated speculum into your vaginal canal to obtain a clear view of your vulva, vagina, and cervix. The healthcare provider will carefully collect a sample from your cervix using a cotton swab. This sample will be sent to a lab for analysis to check for any cervical cancer indications and to ensure your cervix’s overall health.
Upper Body Exam
During your upper body exam, the physician will ask you to raise one arm behind your head so that they can better examine each side. The painless exam involves gentle, circular movements to check for lumps or cysts.
These exams are essential for spotting early signs of cancer. Not all lumps are cancerous, but finding them early reduces risks and lets your medical team know what to monitor in the future. If any concerning lumps are found, a biopsy will be ordered to determine whether they are cancerous.
